He graduated as spatial soil scientist at the WU, later followed by a PhD study on the use of imaging spectroscopy to quantify the quantity and quality of grass feed in the field. Later projects included studies on nutrient flows in Dutch dairy systems, biomass assessments using remote sensing and modelling approaches and grain yield forecasting in Western Australia, presence of refugia for plant species on granite outcrops of Western Australia, assessments of land degradation at the global scale. His current projects focus on a better understanding of variability within the landscape to optimise plant growth for local conditions, maximising resource use efficiency and yield.
